The holding cost, in one page
0.01% a week on money sitting idle, which is 0.52% a year. Not on what you have backed, not on what you take out, and never taken without your approval.
What it is
Money sitting idle in your account accrues a holding cost of 0.01% a week. That is 0.52% a year: a balance of 100 left untouched for a whole year accrues 52 cents. It is the smallest charge on the platform and the one most easily avoided, because it only ever applies to money that is doing nothing.
What it is not charged on
Anything you have backed. A pledge sits in a campaign's escrow, not in your account, and it is never charged. Money you take out is never charged. Balances under 10 are not charged at all, so a few coins left over after a pledge accrue nothing.
How it is settled
Nothing is taken on its own. Your account is yours and only you can move money out of it, which is the whole design of the platform; the holding cost is no exception. What accrues is shown on the Payments screen, and you settle it there in one tap, or it rides along with your next pledge, transfer or withdrawal in the same transaction you were already approving. If you never approve it, it stays as a figure on a screen.
Why it exists
Every account here is a real wallet on a public network that we keep running for you, whether or not you use it. The holding cost is what a dormant account costs, charged only to the dormant money, at a rate low enough that an active backer never notices it. The alternative most platforms choose is a monthly account fee or a cut on withdrawal, and we charge neither.
